Levi and Rovaniemi are about 170 km apart and sell different winters. Levi is a compact resort village under Finland's largest ski area, with tour pickups, lifts and hotels within a few hundred metres and dark forest a short drive away. Rovaniemi is a city of around 60,000 people on the Arctic Circle with Santa Claus Village, a bigger airport and more restaurants, but no real ski hill.

What each place actually is

Levi is the village of Sirkka in Kittilä municipality, built around the foot of Levi fell. The Zero Point crossing gathers the gondola, the ski school, the hotels, the supermarket and the tour desks; you can walk from the airport bus to the lift in a few minutes. Outside the village the forest is dark within a couple of kilometres, which is why the aurora villages and snowmobile aurora tours work.

Rovaniemi is the administrative capital of Finnish Lapland, a rebuilt post-war city with an airport about 10 km out, Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle, the Arktikum museum and a large stock of city hotels. Tours leave from the city but drive 20 to 60 minutes to reach dark sky, and the ski hill at Ounasvaara is a local afternoon rather than a ski holiday.

Airports and getting there

Kittilä Airport sits about 15 km south of Levi. Finnair flies from Helsinki year-round and the winter charters from the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France and other markets land here from December to March or April; the airport bus takes about 20 minutes. Rovaniemi Airport has more daily Helsinki flights, more seasonal European routes and a shorter run into the city, which makes it easier for a last-minute or off-peak booking.

The night train from Helsinki reaches Rovaniemi directly; for Levi it runs to Kolari, about 85 km away, with a bus or car onward. If you are combining both, fly into one and out of the other and use the coach or a rental car for the roughly two-hour road between them.

A first Levi trip belongs in the centre around the Zero Point, where the airport bus, the lifts and every pickup are on foot; add an aurora village night only if the sky is the priority.

Families: Santa first or snow first?

Children who want to meet Santa Claus at the Arctic Circle, cross the line and post a card from the official post office belong in Rovaniemi, especially in December. Children who want ski school, sledging hills and a resort they can wander around belong in Levi, where the Leevilandia family park and the beginner slopes sit beside the centre hotels and the pools at Water World fill the twilight afternoons.

Husky, reindeer and snowmobile tours exist in both places at similar lengths. The difference is the transfer: in Levi most farms are minutes away and pickups are at the hotel door; in Rovaniemi the farms are further out and the day includes more bus time.

  • Choose Rovaniemi for Santa, museums and a first Christmas visit with young children.
  • Choose Levi for skiing, a walkable resort and darker skies close to the hotel.
  • Choose both for a week: three nights of Santa and city, four nights of slopes and aurora.

Prices and seasonality

Both places peak from about 20 December to 2 January. Levi has a second peak in the Finnish ski holidays, roughly the last week of February to mid-March, and a smaller one at Easter, when the village hotels and the charters fill months ahead. Rovaniemi's demand is flatter across winter and its larger hotel stock keeps mid-week rates lower in January and March.

Early December and the second half of January are the value weeks in both. In Levi they add quiet slopes and the returning sun after the short polar night; in Rovaniemi they keep Santa Claus Village open without the Christmas queues.
