Watching on your own: the fell and the lake shore

The cheapest option is a clear sky and a short walk. The village lighting fades within a few hundred metres of the centre; the lake shore below the village and the paths toward the golf course give an open northern horizon. The summit of the fell is darker still and Hotel Levi Panorama's terrace faces the open sky, so a gondola ride or a summit hotel night is the simplest self-guided plan; check the gondola's evening hours.

Use two forecasts. The FMI Auroras Now service turns yellow or red when its magnetometers register activity likely to be visible, and the NOAA 30-minute forecast shows where the oval sits; the Kittilä cloud forecast from FMI decides whether you will see anything. On a clear night with any activity, go out; on a cloudy night, stay in the sauna.

Guided tours: minivan, snowmobile and ice floating

Minivan tours collect at the centre hotels after dinner, drive 20 to 60 minutes to a dark lake or forest camp with a fire and a barbecue, and return around midnight. They are the family and beginner choice. Snowmobile aurora safaris follow the marked tracks to a wilderness stop and back, with two people per machine and a driving licence needed for the driver; they add the ride to the wait. Ice-floating evenings put you in a survival suit on a frozen lake to watch the sky from the water.

None of them can move the cloud. The forest stops are darker than the village but they are also within the same weather, so the chase logic of the Norwegian coast does not apply here; a guide's value in Levi is the fire, the darkness, the photos and the knowledge of which lake is open.

• Minivan with campfire: easiest, warmest, best for children and first-timers.
• Snowmobile safari: the ride is the point; needs a driving licence and a steady hand on icy tracks.
• Ice floating: a novelty for a clear, calm night rather than a serious aurora hunt.

Glass igloos and aurora cabins as an aurora product

Levi's aurora villages sell the view from bed: heated glass igloos at Golden Crown Levin Iglut on Utsuvaara fell, glass-roofed cabins at Northern Lights Village Levi and the Sky Suites at Hotel Levi Panorama. They remove the cold and the waiting, and many include an alarm or wake-up call when the lights appear. They cost more than a hotel night and a tour combined, and the roof shows the same cloud as the car park.

Book two nights rather than one so a cloudy first night is not the whole experience, and place them at the start or the end of the trip so the ski days stay in the village. Treat the sauna, the quiet and the on-site huskies and snowmobiles as the fallback.

What to wear and how long to wait

Standing still at −25 °C is a different problem from skiing at −10 °C. Wear insulated boots with room for thick wool socks, mittens over thin gloves for the camera, a hat that covers the ears and a face covering. Tour operators lend thermal suits; on a self-guided walk, bring a thermos and turn back before your feet go numb. Phone batteries fail quickly in the cold; keep the phone inside the jacket and carry a power bank.
