Levi is a purpose-built resort village called Sirkka in Kittilä municipality, about 170 km north of the Arctic Circle, with Finland's largest ski area on the fell above it and Kittilä Airport about 15 km down the road. It suits people who want skiing, huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles in one walkable place, with northern lights as the evening plan rather than the only plan.
Start with what the trip is really for, then check whether the month and the logistics support it.
Families and mixed groups who want lifts, floodlit slopes, cross-country tracks and husky or snowmobile tours within walking distance of the hotel.
Anyone who wants a city, museums and a large choice of restaurants at night; Rovaniemi is the better city base in Finnish Lapland.
Three or more nights between December and March with at least two evenings kept free, and a willingness to walk or ride away from the village lights.

Use the centre hotels when the ski bus, the pickups and the restaurants matter more than the room rate; nothing is more than ten minutes on foot. Hotel Levi Panorama and the front-slope hotels suit people who ski every day and want to step out of the door onto the piste. The glass igloos and aurora cabins at Utsuvaara, Köngäs and Taalovaara are worth one or two nights for a couple whose main goal is the sky, but they cost time and transfers for a family week.

Levi is a ski resort village: slopes, tour pickups and hotels within a few hundred metres, a smaller airport 15 km away and darker skies close by. Rovaniemi is a city with Santa Claus Village, more flights and more restaurants, but no real ski area and a longer drive to dark sky. Skiers and active families pick Levi; Santa-first families and city lovers pick Rovaniemi.
Four nights is the practical number: two ski or activity days, one husky or snowmobile morning and two evenings free for the aurora. Three nights work for a pure ski break. A full week suits families on a charter package who want to ski most days and add one or two tours.
Strong displays are visible from the village, but the floodlit slopes and hotel lights hide weaker ones. Most successful nights involve a walk to the lake shore or the edge of the village, a gondola or drive up the fell, or a guided minivan or snowmobile tour into darker forest.
Not for a resort-based trip: the airport bus, the free ski bus within the resort and tour pickups cover the usual plan. Rent a car only if you want your own aurora drives, a day trip to Ylläs or Pallas, or the road to Rovaniemi.
The Kittilä monthly means are about −10 °C in December, −13 °C in January and −12 °C in February, with average lows around −15 to −18 °C and occasional nights below −30 °C. The air is dry and calm more often than on the Norwegian coast, so layered clothing handles it well.
The resort usually opens the first slopes in early October and keeps skiing into May; the 2026–27 season is announced to start on 2 October 2026. The full lift network and the floodlit slopes are normally running from late November, so confirm the open lifts before an early-season trip.
