How to get to Levi: fly into Kittilä, take the night train to Kolari, or drive up from Rovaniemi.

Levi has one of the shortest airport transfers of any Nordic winter resort: Kittilä Airport is about 15 km south of the village, about 20 minutes by bus or taxi. The alternatives are the VR night train from Helsinki to Kolari with about 85 km of bus or car onward, and the road from Rovaniemi, about 170 km and around two hours.

Flying into Kittilä

Kittilä Airport handled nearly half a million passengers in 2025 and exists mainly for Levi and Ylläs. Finnair flies from Helsinki through the year with several daily flights in winter, and from about December to April charters and seasonal routes arrive from the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, France and other markets; the exact list changes each season, so check the airport's current routes before assuming a direct flight from your city.

Landing here in winter is routine, but snow and fog do delay flights. Do not book a tour that starts within two hours of a scheduled arrival, and keep the first evening free.

From the airport to the village

Airport buses run to the scheduled flights and stop at the centre hotels; the timetable follows the flight schedule, so confirm the departure for your flight on the Levi website and buy the ticket on board or online as instructed there. Taxis wait at arrivals and take about 20 minutes to the centre, longer to the summit hotel or the aurora villages. Many hotels and aurora resorts sell their own transfer; charter packages usually include the coach.

Car rental desks are in the terminal. A car is useful for a day trip to Ylläs or Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park or for your own aurora drives, but a resort-based trip does not need one.

The night train to Kolari

VR runs night trains from Helsinki to Kolari, the northernmost station in Finland, with sleeping cabins and, on some departures, car-carrier wagons from Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. In the ski season up to two night trains a night serve Kolari and three serve Rovaniemi. Kolari station is about 85 km from Levi; buses and taxis meet the trains for the onward leg of about an hour and a half, and rental cars can be collected at the station by arrangement.

The train suits families with a car, travelers who dislike winter flight connections and anyone who wants to wake up in Lapland with the day ahead. Check the timetable on the VR site because the service is seasonal and track works can suspend it outside winter.

Road and coach from Rovaniemi and elsewhere

Rovaniemi is about 170 km south-east of Levi, around two hours by car on Road 79 through Kittilä in normal winter conditions. Matkahuolto coaches link Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Levi; use the journey planner for the current timetable, which is thinner outside the ski season. From Helsinki the drive is about 950 km and best split with a night on the way or replaced by the car-carrier train.

Ylläs is about 50 km to the west and Pallas about 60 km to the north-west, both reachable for a ski or hiking day with a car; coach links between the resorts are limited.
