By mid-February the sun is up for almost eight hours and by the end of March for more than thirteen, the snow is at its deepest and the evenings stay dark until well after dinner. These are Levi's core ski weeks, and also the busiest, because the Finnish school ski holidays run from the last week of February into mid-March.

Why these are the ski months

February has the deepest cold of the winter and the most reliable dry snow, with the sun back long enough for a full day on the fell. March keeps the snow but adds warmth: afternoon highs around −3 °C on average, sun on the south slopes and evenings that stay dark until after 19:00 for most of the month. The full lift network, the gondolas and the cross-country tracks are all running, and the floodlit slopes extend skiing into the evening.

The aurora season continues through both months. The equinox weeks in late March are statistically active for geomagnetic storms, and the dry inland air gives more clear nights than the Norwegian coast, so an evening plan around the sky still makes sense.

School-holiday weeks and how to avoid them

Finnish schools take their ski holidays in three regional waves across roughly weeks 8 to 10, from about 20 February to 15 March, and Levi is the most popular destination for them. UK and Dutch half-term weeks add charter arrivals in mid-February. Lift queues lengthen, ski school fills and hotel rates rise. If your dates are free, the first two weeks of February and the last two of March give the same conditions with shorter queues.

Ski-week logistics

Buy the lift pass and book ski hire online before arrival in the holiday weeks; the rental shops at the Zero Point queue on Saturday mornings. Ski school for children runs from the front slopes and the Leevilandia family park, so a centre or front-slope hotel keeps the morning walk short. The free ski bus loops the resort and connects the west and south slopes with the centre.

Plan tours around the ski days: a husky or reindeer morning fits before an afternoon on the lifts, a snowmobile safari with ice fishing takes most of a day, and an aurora tour starts after dinner. Keep the last evening free as the retry for a cloudy night.

Packing for February and March

February needs full winter kit: insulated boots, a face covering for the lifts and mittens over liner gloves for −20 °C mornings. March is milder but the mornings are still well below freezing and the afternoon sun is strong on the snow, so add sunglasses and sunscreen. Thermal suits are lent on husky and snowmobile tours; ski clothing is enough for the aurora walks near the village.
