Kemi or Rovaniemi? Rovaniemi for the base, Kemi for the sea ice, and the train joins them in about 1.5 hours.

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland with an international airport, Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle, a large tour market and better aurora odds. Kemi is a small port town about 117 km to the south-west with two products nobody else has: an icebreaker cruise through the frozen Bothnian Bay and the SnowCastle area. They are about 1.5 hours apart by train, so the real question is how to split the nights.

What each town does that the other cannot

Rovaniemi has the airport, the Santa Claus Village and the post office on the Arctic Circle, husky and reindeer farms within twenty minutes, snowmobile trails in every direction and dozens of aurora operators. It also has restaurants, supermarkets and a shopping street, which matters with children in the cold. Kemi has the only tourist icebreakers in the Nordics, sea ice you can walk on beside a ship, and the SnowCastle area with its year-round indoor snow hall.

The overlap is small. Both offer huskies, reindeer and an aurora tour, but the Rovaniemi versions are more numerous and easier to combine. Kemi's animal products are add-ons to the cruise, not reasons to travel.

Aurora odds, honestly

Neither town is the best aurora base in Finland; Levi, Saariselkä and Inari sit further north and darker. Between the two, Rovaniemi has the edge: about 0.8 degrees further north, with tours that drive out to frozen lakes and forest roads without light. Kemi's shore faces the mill and the port, and the flat bay gives a wide horizon but not a dark one. On an active night both see the lights; on a quiet night Rovaniemi's tours find them more often.

Three ways to combine them

The day trip is the least effort: a coach from Rovaniemi at breakfast time, the cruise with ice floating, the coach back in the evening. It costs a full day and most of it is the road. The two-night stop is the better value for time: train from Rovaniemi to Kemi in about 1.5 hours, a night, the cruise and the SnowCastle area, a second night in a glass villa or a centre hotel, then the train south to Oulu and Helsinki or back north. The third is the train route from Helsinki with Kemi as the first Lapland stop and Rovaniemi after it, which works for anyone arriving by day train or night train.

Rovaniemi costs more and gives more: restaurants open late, shops, tour desks and a bus to the airport. Families with a week usually take four nights in Rovaniemi and two in Kemi; couples on a shorter trip take the Rovaniemi base and the Kemi day trip; train travelers heading north give Kemi two nights before Rovaniemi.
