Usually the best value for a short stop: no taxi to the station, dinner within a few streets and the shuttle at the hotel door, so the whole stay runs without a car.

Tornio and Haparanda on the border
Best for a three- or four-night stay with a car or a Sweden connection.
Tornio sits about 30 km north-west of Kemi on the Torne River, joined to Haparanda in Sweden by a bridge you can walk across. The twin towns add a second centre, river views, a 1686 wooden church and the northernmost IKEA, and the icebreaker shuttle collects here too.
Value case
Good value across three or more nights: Tornio hotel rates are similar to Kemi, the river setting is darker for aurora than the Kemi shore, and Haparanda adds Swedish restaurants and shops within walking distance.

Which Kemi hotels are the usual icebreaker shuttle pickup points?
The operator lists several Kemi hotel pickups plus stops in Tornio, Haparanda, Rovaniemi and Oulu. Scandic Kemi, Hotelli Merihovi and Park Hotel Tornio appear on shuttle lists most winters, but the exact stops and times are in the booking confirmation; check them rather than assuming.
Can I still sleep in a snow room at the SnowCastle?
Snow suites were sold inside the SnowCastle in earlier winters. When checked in September 2026 the operator's accommodation page listed only the Seaside Glass Villas and a camping area, and its SnowCastle page said the full castle has been replaced by the Winter Park; ask the operator directly before planning a night in snow.
How far is the SnowCastle area from the centre and the station?
About a kilometre along the shore from the centre and a little more from the railway station: a 15- to 20-minute walk on cleared paths, or a taxi of a few minutes. Scandic Kemi sits roughly halfway between the two.
Is Tornio or Kemi the better base for the icebreaker?
Kemi for a short stop: the ships sail from Kemi and the station is in town. Tornio for a longer stay with a car or a Sweden connection, because the twin towns give more to do between the cruise day and the departure.
Is it worth paying for a sea view in Kemi in winter?
Only at the glass villas, where the view is the product. In the centre the bay is frozen and dark for most of the day from December to January; spend the difference on the afternoon cruise with lunch instead.
When do Kemi hotels sell out?
Christmas to New Year, the Finnish winter school holidays in late February and early March and the weekends with the most sailings. Book the hotel as soon as the cruise date is fixed for those weeks; other winter weeks usually hold rooms a few weeks ahead.
