How to get to Kemi: the train is the answer for most trips, the airport for a few, the coach from Rovaniemi for a day.

By train: the main line runs through the town

Kemi is 858 km from Helsinki by rail on the line through Oulu, and every passenger train on the route stops at the station on Rautatienkatu. Day trains from Helsinki change or run through at Oulu and reach Kemi in the afternoon or evening; the night trains from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi pass Kemi in the early morning northbound and late in the evening southbound, which suits a cruise day only if the times line up.

From Rovaniemi the ride is about 1.5 hours and from Oulu about an hour, both several times a day, so Kemi works as a stop between the two rather than a dead end. Buy tickets on vr.fi or in the VR app; the cheapest fares are sold weeks ahead and the sleeper cabins for holiday weeks earlier still.

• Helsinki to Kemi by day: via Oulu, most of a day; check the connection time at Oulu.
• Helsinki to Kemi by night: sleeper toward Rovaniemi or Kolari, early-morning arrival.
• Rovaniemi or Oulu to Kemi: about 1.5 hours or 1 hour, several trains a day.

By air: a small airport with a seasonal Helsinki link

Kemi-Tornio Airport is a few minutes' drive north of the town, operated by Finavia, with Finnair flights from Helsinki on a route that Wikipedia lists as state-supported and running from October to July. Flights are few and the timetable changes by season; there is no regular airport bus, so book a taxi or rental car for arrival and confirm the return flight time against the cruise calendar.

For most visitors the airport is the second choice: the flight saves hours over the train from Helsinki but costs flexibility, and anyone continuing to Rovaniemi is better off on the rails.

By coach and the Rovaniemi day trip

Matkahuolto coaches run along the coast road between Oulu, Kemi and Tornio and inland to Rovaniemi, with the bus station in the centre of Kemi a few minutes from the hotels. Timetables and tickets are in the Matkahuolto app and journey planner; the Tornio run is about 30 to 40 minutes.

The icebreaker operator also runs its own shuttles from Kemi hotels, Tornio, Haparanda, Rovaniemi and Oulu to the harbour, and the coach-and-cruise products from Rovaniemi bundle the transfer with the ticket. For a Rovaniemi-based trip that only wants the icebreaker, that day trip is simpler than any public connection.

By car in winter

National road 4, signed as the E75, runs along the coast from Oulu through Kemi to Rovaniemi, and the E8 continues to Tornio and the Swedish border on the northernmost motorway in the world. Winter tyres are mandatory, the open coastal sections drift in wind, and daylight in December is about three hours. A car is useful for a Tornio base or a coastal loop; for a two-night stop the train, the shuttle and taxis cover everything.
