What happens on board in four hours

The cruise begins with boarding at the harbour and a safety briefing while the ship works out of the channel into the fast ice of the bay. Once clear, the crew stop the ship and let passengers down a gangway onto the ice for photographs beside the hull, then open the water behind the stern for the ice floating: you step into a sealed survival suit and float in the broken ice for a few minutes, arms and legs spread, while a crew member stays within reach.

Back on board there is a guided walk through the engine room, the bridge and the officers' mess, and the afternoon sailing adds a lunch buffet in the saloon. The ship then breaks a wide turn through the ice and returns to the quay. Expect roughly two hours outside on the deck and the ice in total; the saloons are heated and the café stays open.

Season, ice and what can change a sailing

The Bothnian Bay freezes every winter, which is why Kemi can promise sea ice at all, but the thickness and the weather decide the details. Early sailings in December may run on thinner ice with the walk on the ice or the floating shortened, while February and March give the thickest ice and the longest daylight for photographs. Strong wind, heavy snowfall or moving ice can cancel a departure; the operator then moves you to another sailing or refunds.

Because sailings are limited to a few departures on selected days, the calendar for the winter matters more than the general season. Check the published departure calendar, pick a date with a spare day after it, and fix the train or flight only once the cruise is confirmed.

From Kemi or from Rovaniemi?

From Kemi the day is short: the shuttle collects from the hotel, the harbour is a few kilometres south of the centre, and you are back by mid-afternoon with time for the SnowCastle area. From Rovaniemi the same cruise sits inside a coach day of about 10 to 11 hours, leaving in the morning darkness and returning in the evening, which suits travelers with a Rovaniemi hotel already booked and no wish to move.

Children under about six, anyone who dislikes long coach rides and photographers who want the low light on the ice at both ends of the day are better served by a night in Kemi. The train between Rovaniemi and Kemi takes about 1.5 hours and makes the two-night stop simple.
