Kemi SnowCastle area: what is built each winter, what is open all year and where to sleep.

Kemi built its first snow castle in 1996 and rebuilt it every winter for two decades, with a snow hotel, an ice restaurant and a chapel inside walls that ran for hundreds of metres. The area at Mansikkanokka on Lumilinnankatu now works differently: a year-round indoor snow building called SnowExperience365, a Winter Park of snow and ice built each season, the SnowCastle Restaurant and the Seaside Glass Villas on the shore.

What the SnowCastle area is now

The original SnowCastle was a full building of snow with a hotel, a restaurant of ice tables and reindeer furs and an ecumenical chapel seating 50 to 100 for weddings. Warm winters and the cost of making tens of thousands of cubic metres of snow changed the model. The operator, The Icebreaking Company, states on its SnowCastle page that the castle has not been built in the area for years and has been replaced by the SnowCastle Winter Park.

The main building holds SnowExperience365, a cold indoor hall of ice sculptures, an ice slide and an ice bar that is open every day of the year, plus a gemstone exhibition and the SnowCastle Restaurant. Outside, from mid-January, the Winter Park adds snow slides, a snow labyrinth, a carousel and outdoor sculptures for as long as the snow holds, usually into April.

Winter Park visit or year-round visit?

Between mid-January and early April a visit covers both the indoor hall and the outdoor park, and a couple of hours is enough unless children want the slides again and again. Outside those months the SnowExperience365 hall is the whole visit: about an hour, useful as the indoor part of a summer or autumn stop and as a cold-weather fallback in December before the park opens.

Opening hours change with the season and the park can close early on days of heavy snowfall or thaw; check the day's hours on the operator's site before you walk out along the shore.

The Seaside Glass Villas and the question of snow rooms

The Seaside Glass Villas stand on the shore beside the area in rows: seafront premium villas in the front row, superior villas behind, and two-storey loft villas with a private sauna. Each has its own entrance, a kitchen and a bathroom, the glass walls and roof face the bay, and breakfast at the SnowCastle Restaurant is included. On a clear, active night the aurora is visible through the roof; on most nights the view is the frozen bay and the sky.

Snow suites were sold inside the castle in earlier winters. When checked in September 2026 the operator's accommodation page listed only the villas and a camping area. If a night on a snow bed is the point of the trip, ask the operator whether snow rooms are on sale for your winter before booking anything else, and treat a glass villa as the reliable alternative.

Fitting the area into a two-night stop

The simplest sequence from a Kemi hotel is the morning icebreaker cruise, lunch, then the SnowCastle area in the afternoon while the day ticket included with the cruise is valid. With a glass-villa booking, sleep at the area the night after the cruise so that breakfast, the park and the walk on the shore fill the last morning before the train. A husky ride or the sight-skiing outing fits a third day if there is one.

Is the SnowCastle still built every winter?

Not at its former size. The operator's site says the full castle has not been built for years and that the SnowCastle Winter Park has replaced it, with the year-round SnowExperience365 hall as the indoor part. Expect snow slides, a labyrinth and sculptures rather than a walled castle.

Can I visit the SnowCastle area in summer?

Yes. The SnowExperience365 building keeps its ice sculptures, ice slide and ice bar cold all year, and the villas and restaurant operate outside winter. The outdoor Winter Park exists only while the snow holds, usually mid-January to April.

Is the ice chapel still used for weddings?

The historic castle had a SnowChapel seating 50 to 100. Whether a chapel is built in a given Winter Park changes by season; couples planning a ceremony should ask the operator for that winter's plan rather than rely on older articles.

How do I get to the SnowCastle area from the station?

It is about a kilometre and a half along the shore from the railway station and about a kilometre from the centre, a 15- to 20-minute walk on cleared paths or a taxi of a few minutes. Scandic Kemi is roughly halfway.
