Norway's mountains get the posters, but the capitals carry Scandinavia's museums, food halls, and design. This route pairs the two strongest city stays with a softer stop between them and keeps every transfer to a single train.
It also works in months when the mountain routes do not: the cities keep their museums, markets, and cafés open through the dark season, and the trains run all year.

Getting there: Arrive at Arlanda and take the airport express or commuter train into the center.
Give Stockholm three full days: Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace, a Djurgården day for the Vasa ship and Skansen, and a boat into the archipelago — the inner islands fit an afternoon, Vaxholm deserves a full one.

Norrmalm is the practical base: every metro line, the airport trains, and the Copenhagen departures leave from beside it. Södermalm trades that convenience for the better evening streets.

Getting there: Take the high-speed train south across the country and base in Malmö.
Malmö gives the route its pause: the lanes of Gamla Väster, the Turning Torso waterfront, and the cold-bath pier at Ribersborg. Lund, a short train hop away, adds the medieval cathedral and one of Scandinavia's oldest university towns.

Why this base
Central Malmö is compact enough to walk end to end; choose the quarter for the evening you want rather than for distance.
Getting there: Cross the Øresund Bridge; the train runs directly from Malmö into Copenhagen Central.
Finish with the densest capital: Nyhavn and the harbor circle, the Christiansborg tower at sunset, a Tivoli evening, and the food halls. Add the Louisiana art museum up the coast by regional train if art leads the trip.

Stockholm first or Copenhagen first?
Either direction works; fly open-jaw and start where the arrival flight lands cheaper. Ending in Copenhagen suits onward European connections, ending in Stockholm suits archipelago weather in high summer.
How many nights does each city need?
Three full days in Stockholm, two in Copenhagen, and one or two for Malmö and Lund. If you must cut, shorten the middle stop, never the capitals.
Does this route work with children?
Well: the transfers are single trains, the city centers are easy with a stroller, and Skansen, the Vasa ship, and Tivoli carry the program. Book family spaces and museum tickets ahead in school holidays.
Can I day-trip to Norway from this route?
No — Oslo is too far for a sensible day trip. When Norway matters, take the full Copenhagen to Bergen route instead of forcing it into this one.
