Gothenburg is the calm counterweight to the capitals: the wooden houses and coffee culture of Haga, the fish market halls, and a boat into the southern archipelago, which regular ferries cover in an afternoon.

Getting there: Ride the Oslo to Bergen railway across the Hardangervidda plateau and change at Myrdal for the Flåm Railway down to the fjord.
This is the stage the whole route builds toward: the high-mountain crossing, the steep descent to Flåm, and a night at the water before the boat day. Book these segments before any hotel on the route.

Nærøyfjord boat day to Bergen
Getting there: Cruise the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, connect by bus to Voss, and finish into Bergen by train.
The narrowest arm of the Sognefjord carries UNESCO status and is the one boat trip worth structuring an entire day around. The Gudvangen to Voss bus and the Voss to Bergen train are the two connections that hold the day together.
