The classic fjord day from Bergen is a loop: train to Voss, bus down to Gudvangen, an electric boat along the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord to Flåm, the Flåm Railway up to Myrdal and the Bergen Line back. It runs all year, takes a full day, and every leg has a seat that can sell out in summer.

The loop leg by leg

From Bergen station the Bergen Line climbs east to Voss in a little over an hour. A bus then drops down the valley to Gudvangen at the head of the Nærøyfjord; in summer it usually takes the old Stalheim hairpin road, in winter the tunnel. The boat leg is the reason for the trip: about two hours along the Nærøyfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord that narrows to about 250 m between cliffs, then round into the Aurlandsfjord to Flåm.

From Flåm the Flåm Railway climbs about 860 m in about an hour to Myrdal on the Bergen Line, with a photo stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall, and the main-line train runs west to Bergen in about two hours. The loop can also be run in reverse, Bergen to Myrdal first, which puts the boat in the afternoon.

Day trip or overnight in Flåm?

The day trip works when Bergen is the only base and you have two nights: you sleep in the same hotel, carry nothing but a day bag, and use the second day for the city. The cost is a long day with tight connections and no time in Flåm beyond the platform and the shops.

The overnight version splits the loop across two days, adds the Stegastein viewpoint above Aurland, a fjord kayak or the Flåm brewery, and suits anyone continuing to Oslo, since Myrdal is on the line east. It needs three nights in total and a second hotel booking; Flåm has a handful of hotels that fill early in summer.

The loop leaves from Bergen railway station early in the morning and returns there in the evening, so a hotel within a few minutes of the station saves the most time on a wet start.

What to book early and in which order

The Flåm Railway and the electric boats carry the capacity limit. From June to August the popular midday departures sell out days or weeks ahead, and the Bergen Line trains need seat reservations. Book the loop, or the two scarce legs, as soon as the dates are fixed, then the flights that fit, then the hotel. Coach tours from Bergen that include the boat are an alternative when the trains are full; they cost more but hold the seats for you.

  • Fixed-date summer trip: book the loop first, the hotel second.
  • Winter trip: check the timetable before choosing the day; there may be one boat.
  • Continuing to Oslo: book Flåm to Myrdal and Myrdal to Oslo as separate legs on the same day.

What to confirm before the day

Confirm the departure platform and time on the voucher, whether the bus takes the Stalheim road or the tunnel, and where the boat boards in Gudvangen. Check the weather for Myrdal separately: it sits at about 860 m and can be snowing while Flåm is raining. Bring food for the boat and the train; the cafés are small and the queues long on cruise-ship days.

Does Norway in a Nutshell run in winter?

Yes, all year, but on winter frequencies: the Flåm Railway drops to about four departures a day and the boat may run only once or twice. Check the day's timetable before booking and expect a shorter boat leg in the dark by late afternoon in December.

Can I do the Flåm loop without booking a package?

Yes. Buy the Bergen Line and Flåm Railway tickets from Vy, the boat from the operator and the bus from Skyss or on board. The package saves the coordination and holds the seats together, which matters in summer.

Which direction should I do the loop?

Bergen to Voss first puts the boat in the middle of the day and the Flåm Railway in the afternoon, which suits photographers. Bergen to Myrdal first gives an earlier boat and a later, quieter train home. Both return around 19:00 to 20:00 in summer.

Is the Mostraumen cruise a substitute for the Flåm loop?

No, but it is the short option: about three and a half hours from the Bergen harbour along the Osterfjord to a narrow strait, back in time for lunch. Take it when you have one day and the loop does not fit.
