Summer is when Bergen works best and is busiest. The sun is up from about 04:10 to 23:10 at midsummer, every fjord boat, train and tour is on its full timetable, and the means of 13.6 °C in June and 15.6 °C in July are comfortable for walking. It also rains on 13 to 15 days a month and cruise ships add thousands of visitors to Bryggen on the busiest days.

What the long days give you

With light from before 05:00 until after 23:00 in June, the fjord day no longer needs to be compressed: a morning Nutshell departure returns in full daylight, and there is time for Fløyen after dinner. Waterfalls run at their fullest in June from the snowmelt, and the hillsides above the fjords are green rather than grey. July and August are warmer, though August rain climbs back toward 200 mm.

Cruise ships, Bryggen and the funicular queue

On a busy day several ships dock within walking distance of Bryggen, and their passengers arrive on the wharf and at the Fløibanen lower station between about 10:00 and 15:00. The wooden lanes of Bryggen are narrow and the funicular carries a fixed number of people, so queues of an hour are normal at midday. The fix is timing: walk Bryggen and ride the funicular before 09:00 or after 17:00, and use the middle of the day for the fjords, KODE or the aquarium.

  • Check the Bergen port cruise calendar for the days you will be in the city.
  • Buy Fløibanen tickets in advance in the app to skip the ticket counter, though not the boarding queue.
  • Walk up Fløyen on the paths, about 45 minutes, if the queue is long; ride down.

Why the trains and boats sell out

The Flåm Railway, the electric Nærøyfjord boats and the Bergen Line all have fixed capacity, and in July the midday departures fill weeks ahead with tour groups and cruise passengers. Book the loop or the two scarce legs first, then the flights, then the hotel. If the trains are full, the guided coach tours from Bergen that include the Nærøyfjord cruise are the fallback, and the Mostraumen cruise from the harbour rarely sells out.

Rain in summer and what to pack

June is the driest month of the year with about 132 mm, which is still rain on roughly 13 days. Showers pass quickly and the temperature barely moves, so a light shell jacket, quick-drying trousers and shoes that survive puddles are enough. Leave the umbrella; the wind on the fjords makes it useless. Sunglasses and sunscreen matter on the boats when the sky clears.
