Saariselkä or Rovaniemi? A remote fell village with better aurora odds against a city with Santa and a train.

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland on the Arctic Circle, with a night train from Helsinki, a busy airport, Santa Claus Village and a city of hotels and restaurants. Saariselkä is about 260 km further north: a fell village of a few thousand beds beside a national park, reached by Ivalo Airport or a long coach ride, with darker skies, a real polar night and the glass-igloo resorts.

Aurora odds: the far north wins

Both towns sit under the auroral oval on active nights, but Saariselkä is about 250 km closer to it and shows lights on quiet nights that give Rovaniemi nothing. Saariselkä's dark sky is a ten-minute walk from any hotel; Rovaniemi's hunts drive 30 to 60 minutes out of the city lights. The polar night adds about seventeen hours of darkness in December, against about eighteen hours of darkness but a short daylight in Rovaniemi. For a trip where the lights are the point, Saariselkä is the better base.

Getting there: airports, the train and the coach

Rovaniemi has the night train from Helsinki, direct Finnair and Norwegian flights and many winter charters, so it is cheaper and easier to reach and to leave. Saariselkä depends on Ivalo Airport, about 25 km north, with Finnair from Helsinki year-round and winter charters from several European cities, or on the coach from Rovaniemi, about 3.5 to 4 hours. There is no railway north of Rovaniemi and Kemijärvi.

That difference decides the trip for many travelers: a family with a fixed budget and a train ticket ends up in Rovaniemi, a couple with a Helsinki connection can reach Ivalo in about ninety minutes of flying.

Families: Santa or huskies?

Rovaniemi has Santa Claus Village, the Arctic Circle line, SantaPark and a city of indoor options for cold days, which is what a Santa-first trip with young children needs. Saariselkä has huskies, reindeer, a toboggan run, the spa pools at Holiday Club and an igloo night, all quieter and closer together, which suits families with older children who want the outdoors more than the theme park.

  • Both: five nights, Rovaniemi first, then the coach north.

Comfort, cost and what a night costs you

Rovaniemi hotel rooms are cheaper on average and the choice of restaurants is far wider. Saariselkä's village hotels cost more per night in the peaks, the igloos far more, and dinner is a short list of restaurants or the hotel. Tour prices are similar; the saving in Rovaniemi is the flights and the hotel, and the cost is a longer drive to dark sky each evening.

Doing both in one trip

With five or more nights, fly or take the train to Rovaniemi for two nights of Santa and the city, take the morning coach north for about four hours, and spend three nights in Saariselkä with the igloo and the hunts, flying home from Ivalo. Check that the coach timetable fits the flight before booking the tickets, and remember the coach stops in the village rather than at the resorts.

Is Saariselkä colder than Rovaniemi?

Slightly in most months, and the polar night makes December feel colder, but the monthly means are close: about −9.7 °C in Saariselkä and roughly −9 °C in Rovaniemi in December. Both are dry inland cold; pack the same way.

Can I do Santa Claus Village from Saariselkä?

Only as a very long day: about 260 km each way. It is better to stay two nights in Rovaniemi first and take the coach north, or to accept the resort Santa visits at Kakslauttanen and the village at Christmas.

Which has more flights, Ivalo or Rovaniemi?

Rovaniemi by a wide margin, including the night train as an alternative. Ivalo has Finnair from Helsinki year-round with extra winter flights and seasonal charters; fares are usually higher and sell out around Christmas.

Is Saariselkä too small for a week?

For a week without a car, yes for most people. Split the nights with Lake Inari, Nellim or Rovaniemi, or rent a car for day drives to Inari village and the Siida museum.
