Glass igloos in Saariselkä: which resort to book and why one night is enough.

What a glass igloo actually is, and what an aurora cabin is

A glass igloo is a small heated dome or half-dome with a bed under a thermal glass roof that stays clear of frost, so you can lie down and watch the sky at −25 °C. The original Kakslauttanen igloos are compact, with a toilet inside but showers and saunas in a shared building for the smaller units; the larger igloos and the kelo-glass igloos add a private sauna and shower.

An aurora cabin is the newer format: a log or timber cabin with a glass roof over the bed, a full bathroom, heating and often a small living area. Northern Lights Village Saariselkä, Aurora Village Ivalo and the Wilderness Hotels at Inari, Nangu, Muotka and Nellim all use it. The sky view is similar; the comfort is higher and the setting is usually quieter.

Kakslauttanen, Northern Lights Village, Star Arctic or a Wilderness Hotel?

Kakslauttanen is the largest and the most famous, with two villages, restaurants, a planetarium and its own husky, reindeer and snowmobile safaris, so the whole trip can run from the resort. Northern Lights Village Saariselkä sits at the edge of the village on the main road, which makes it the easiest igloo night to combine with village tours and dinners.

Star Arctic Hotel is a different product: a fell-top hotel on Kaunispää with glass-fronted suites, a full bathroom and a restaurant, reached by a short road from the village. The Wilderness Hotels around Lake Inari, Muotka and Nellim add aurora cabins to a lodge with half board and a daily programme; they are the choice when the cabin is part of a two- or three-night lakeside stay rather than a single night.

• Star Arctic Hotel: hotel comfort and a fell view on top of Kaunispää.

Why one night is enough

The glass does one thing: it lets you watch a clear sky from a warm bed. On a clear night one stay gives all of it; on a cloudy night a second stay adds nothing but cost. Igloos are also small, and a two- or three-night trip spent entirely in one leaves no village evenings for a guided hunt, a spa afternoon or a restaurant dinner.

Put the igloo night in the middle of the stay. A delayed flight cannot then cost you the night, and a cloudy igloo night still leaves a guided hunt on the following evening.

What to confirm before you pay

Igloo bookings are usually non-refundable close to the date and the resorts sell out for Christmas and February many months ahead, so check the terms as carefully as the photos.

• Whether the bathroom, shower and sauna are inside the unit or in a shared building.
• The transfer from Ivalo Airport or the village and whether it is included.
• Which meals are included and where dinner is served.
• The cancellation and change terms for the exact date.
• Whether the resort runs its own safaris and whether they collect village bookings.
