December is the polar night month in Saariselkä: from about 6 December the sun stays below the horizon until about 7 January, but civil twilight colours the snow blue and pink for about five hours around midday. It is also the busiest tour month, with Christmas programmes at the resorts and prices to match between Christmas and New Year.

What a December day in Saariselkä actually looks like

The sky begins to lighten around 09:00, reaches a deep blue and pink twilight over the fells at midday and fades to dark by 15:30. The ski slopes on Kaunispää, the toboggan run and the main cross-country trails are floodlit, so the outdoor day carries on after the twilight goes. Daytime safaris run through the twilight hours and the aurora window opens in the late afternoon.

The cold is dry and still in the forest, so −15 °C feels manageable in proper clothing; on the open fell and on a snowmobile the wind changes that. Layers, insulated boots and mittens matter more than anything else you pack.

Christmas and New Year: worth it or avoid?

Between 23 December and 2 January the igloos and hotels charge the highest rates of the year, the resorts run Christmas programmes with Santa visits and the village restaurants need reservations. Some operators pause on 24 and 25 December. If the festive dates are not essential, the first two weeks of December give the same polar night, the same snow and much easier bookings.

If they are essential, book the igloo, the hotel and the aurora hunt as soon as flights are fixed; capacity, not weather, is the limit in that fortnight.

Fitting the igloo, the hunt and the daytime safaris into December

A four-night December plan that works: arrive at Ivalo by mid-afternoon and sleep in the village; guided hunt on night two; husky or snowmobile safari in the twilight of day three and the igloo on night three; a spare evening on night four for a walk to the trail edge or a second attempt. Three nights drops the spare evening, so choose between the igloo and a second hunt.

Pack for dry cold rather than wet cold: wool base layers, a down or synthetic mid-layer, a windproof shell, insulated boots rated to at least −30 °C, wool socks, mittens over liner gloves and a hat that covers the ears. Operators lend thermal overalls and boots on safaris, so the village outfit only needs to survive the walk to dinner and the trail edge. Spikes for icy paths are useful in the village.
