Choose the island and the correct ferry gateway

The southern islands are car-free, with year-round public services from Saltholmen and selected departures from Stenpiren. Plan the actual island, timetable and tram or bus connection. Northern islands use different gateways, including car ferries from Lilla Varholmen. Some central summer services are seasonal, so confirm the chosen route and return rather than assuming a summer departure continues in winter.

Compare the complete public journey and ticket zones

Västtrafik’s zone A covers Gothenburg, Mölndal, Partille and Öckerö. Use the journey planner for the actual ferry and city connection; a sightseeing ticket is a separate purchase. Marstrand lies on a different route, and Kungälv is in zone B. Keep enough time for the last ferry, onward bus and hotel arrival, especially before a separately booked evening visit.

Choose the guided archipelago cruise by its berth

The reviewed Stromma cruise is a two-and-a-half-hour sightseeing trip from Lilla Bommens torg six on M/S S:t Erik, with English and Swedish commentary. Food, drinks and hotel transport are excluded. The listing does not suit wheelchair users; foldable pushchairs must stay on the main deck rather than in the restaurant. Confirm the actual sailing date and access requirements. Passing a fortress or island does not establish admission or a landing.

Choose Paddan for its actual season and access

The reviewed Paddan canal trip takes about fifty minutes from Kungsportsplatsen in an open boat. Its 2026 programme runs through the first day of November, with a temporary October and November route. Boarding involves stairs, and the listing does not suit wheelchair users. Foldable pushchairs depend on space or storage instructions. Confirm the departure and language; hotel transport is excluded, and this published season does not establish a Christmas sailing.

Is a public island ferry the same as a sightseeing cruise?

No. Public ferries serve actual island stops and their ticket zones, while a separately sold cruise has its own berth, guide and route. A boat passing an island does not promise a landing. Plan the return ferry and last city connection before choosing a dinner or hotel arrival.

Does Universeum entry include Wisdome?

No. A regular Universeum ticket and a Wisdome seat are separate purchases unless the selected package explicitly includes both. Children under three still need their own free entry ticket, while Wisdome has separate age and seat requirements. Check the actual film and booking confirmation.

Can I use the Paddan canal boat for Christmas sightseeing?

Do not assume that. The reviewed Paddan listing publishes its 2026 season through the first day of November, before the Christmas programme. Choose an actually available winter sailing or an indoor visit for the selected date. Marstrand’s Christmas market takes place on its own November weekend.
