Why February suits a mixed winter trip

The month has enough daylight for a full activity each day and full darkness by 17:30 for aurora. Snow depth is usually at its best in the hills above the city, so husky and reindeer camps, snowshoe walks and the cross-country trails all run reliably. Photographers get low golden light across the fjord for most of the day.

  • Morning: huskies, reindeer, snowshoes or the Fjellheisen cable car.
  • Afternoon: the Polar Museum, a fjord drive or a sauna before the chase.
  • Evening: an aurora chase on night two, a free evening on night three.

Precipitation days drop to around 13 and the air is colder and clearer than in December, which gives chase tours a better chance of clear sky close to the city. The equinox weeks in March are statistically strong for geomagnetic activity, and late February already benefits. Norwegian winter holidays and several European half-term weeks fall in the second half of February, which lifts hotel rates and sells out husky mornings. The first half of the month has the same conditions with easier bookings. If the dates are fixed by school, book huskies and the chase as soon as flights are confirmed.
