The three tour formats and who each one suits

Minibus chases carry eight to sixteen people and choose the destination on the day from the cloud forecast, which is why they cost more and succeed more often. Guides bring thermal suits, tripods and hot drinks, and most include photos of you under the lights.

Large-bus tours drive to a fixed camp or beach with a fire and food. They are cheaper and warmer for families, but if the camp is under cloud there is no plan B beyond waiting. Boat evenings sail the fjord near the city; the water is calm and the deck is dark, but the boat cannot outrun the weather.

What 'guaranteed northern lights' really means

Operators cannot control the sky. A guarantee in Tromsø normally means that if the guide declares the night unsuccessful, you may join another departure free of charge while you are still in town, or receive a voucher. It is not a cash refund, and it is only useful if you have a spare evening left.

That is the practical reason to book the chase on your second night and keep the third evening free: the free retry has somewhere to go.

Reading the forecast before you commit an evening

Two forecasts matter. The NOAA 30-minute aurora forecast shows where the auroral oval sits and how strong the activity is; Tromsø is under the oval on most nights, so even a low Kp index can produce lights. The cloud forecast from MET Norway decides whether you will see them, and it changes by valley, which is what the chase drivers exploit.

If the afternoon forecast shows clear sky over the city, a cheaper bus tour or even the Fjellheisen viewpoint can be enough. If the coast is clouded and the inland valleys are clear, only a chase will get there.

What to wear and bring on a chase

Most chases stop for one to three hours outside the bus at −5 to −15 °C with wind. Operators lend thermal suits and boots on request, but bring your own hat, thin gloves for the camera, a scarf and wool socks. A phone battery dies fast in the cold; keep it inside the jacket and carry a power bank.

Which night of the trip should I book the aurora chase?

The second night. Arrival evenings are risky for delays, and a second-night chase leaves the third evening for the free retry that most guarantees offer.

Are minibus chases worth the extra cost over the big bus?

On cloudy coastal nights, yes: the chase can drive two or three hours inland to clear sky, while the bus waits at a fixed camp. On a clear night both work and the bus is better value.

Can children join aurora tours in Tromsø?

Most operators accept children from about six years on big-bus tours and from eight to twelve on chases; check the minimum age and the seat rule in the product listing. Late returns after midnight are the real limit for younger children.

What happens if the tour is cancelled for weather?

Operators cancel for storms or road closures and refund or rebook. A cloudy forecast alone is not a cancellation reason; the chase goes out and tries.
