What a December day at Ylläs looks like

Early in the month the sun rises around 10:45, skims the horizon behind the fell and sets before 14:00. From about 16 December it stays below the horizon at the villages, but the sky lightens from around 09:30 to a deep blue and orange twilight over the fell and fades to dark by about 15:15. The lit slopes and lit cross-country tracks run into the evening, so skiing does not stop when the light goes.

Snow is dry and the air is still on most days; a mean of −10.4 °C hides both mild days near freezing and snaps below −25 °C. Dress in layers, keep the outdoor sessions to two or three hours in the cold snaps and use the sauna between them.

Early December: the quiet snow-sure window

The first two weeks of December have snow on the ground, the slopes usually open on both sides and the villages half-empty, at rates well below the Christmas peak. The sun is still up for two to three hours. The trade-offs are that some restaurants and tour operators open only for the season proper and that the SnowVillage has not yet opened, so check the resort and operator dates for your exact week.

Christmas and New Year: full programme, full prices

From about 20 December the villages fill with Finnish and British families, hotels run Christmas dinners, every tour runs daily and the Lainio SnowVillage opens on 25 December. Hotels, night-train cabins and Kittilä flights sell out months ahead, and the hotels charge their highest rates of the winter. Restaurants close early on 24 December, so book a hotel dinner for that evening.

If the festive dates are not the point, the first half of December or mid-January gives similar skiing and darker skies at far lower totals.

Packing for a dry Lapland cold

Pack for dry cold rather than wet: wool base layers, an insulated mid-layer, a windproof shell, insulated boots rated to −20 °C or lower, mittens over thin gloves and a proper hat. Tour operators lend thermal overalls and boots for snowmobile safaris and ice floating; the ski outfit needs to cope with −15 °C on a chairlift. Spikes for icy village roads are cheap in the supermarkets.

Is December good for northern lights at Ylläs?

It has the longest dark hours of the year, and inland Lapland is drier than the Norwegian coast, so clear nights are reasonably common. Plan two evenings and use the FMI and NOAA forecasts each afternoon to pick the better one.

Can I visit the SnowVillage before Christmas?

Usually not; it opens on 25 December most years and runs to early April. If the ice hotel is essential, book dates after Christmas and confirm the season on the SnowVillage site before fixing flights.
