Ylläs is a 719 m fell in Kolari with a ski resort on both flanks, about 330 km of cross-country tracks, and two small villages 11 km apart: Äkäslompolo to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south. Kittilä Airport is about 39 km away and the Kolari night train from Helsinki ends about 37 km away. This guide fixes the month, the arrival and the village before you pay for anything.

Levi is closer to the airport (about 15 km), has more lifts, more restaurants and the biggest tour market in Finnish Lapland. Ylläs has the higher fell, longer runs, a far larger cross-country network, darker skies and fewer people, at the cost of a 45 to 90 minute transfer and quieter evenings. First-time families who want everything walkable usually choose Levi; skiers, cross-country skiers and couples who want quiet usually choose Ylläs.
Four nights is the practical minimum because the transfer costs most of the arrival day. Skiers usually book a six- or seven-night week around the ski bus timetable, which also gives three or four evenings for aurora. Two nights only work as an add-on from Levi or Rovaniemi with a car.
Äkäslompolo is larger, with the Kellokas visitor centre, more restaurants, the tour desks and the northern ski area. Ylläsjärvi is smaller and quieter, with the spa hotel, ski-in chalets and the southern slopes and gondola. The ski bus runs between them through the season, so the choice is about evenings rather than skiing.
Yes on active nights. Both villages are small, and a ten-minute walk to the lake shore or the edge of the forest gives a dark northern horizon. Snowmobile safaris, ice floating and the fell top add distance from the lights and a wider sky, and they matter more on weak nights.
As a visit, yes: the ice hotel, ice restaurant and sculptures are usually open from 25 December to early April and reachable by car, transfer or a snowmobile tour. As a stay, book one night only, keep a warm hotel for the rest of the week, and confirm the season dates and the warm-accommodation option before booking flights around it.
Not for a ski week: the airport bus, the ski bus between the villages and tour pickups cover the usual plan. Rent a car at Kittilä if you want Levi, Pallas or Rovaniemi as day trips, or if you arrive outside the airport-bus season, and only if you are used to unlit winter roads.
