How the day works

Boats leave the Tromsø harbour early, sail three hours north through the sounds, spend one to three hours with the whales and return by dusk. Bus-and-RIB tours drive to Skjervøy in about two and a half hours and then spend two to three hours on the water in small fast boats. Both formats include thermal suits; the boats add indoor lounges and food.

Because the whales follow the fish, the boats communicate and adjust; sightings are frequent in season but never certain, and most operators offer a partial refund or a second trip if nothing is seen.

A whale day consumes the daylight and most of the energy. Keep that evening free, book the aurora chase for another night, and sleep in the city the night before the boat. In a four-night trip the sequence arrive, chase, whales, spare evening works; in three nights you must choose between a spare aurora evening and a spare weather day.

Storm days cancel the boats; operators refund or move you to the next departure, which is why a spare day matters. Wear wool base layers, a windproof mid-layer and warm boots under the thermal suit, and bring seasickness tablets, sunglasses for the low light on the water and a dry bag for the camera.
