Alta is a spread-out town along the fjord, with the shops, the cathedral and the airport bus in the centre, the husky kennels and the igloo hotel 10 to 20 km up the Alta river valley, and small lodges on the fjord and under the mountains where there is no street light at all. Stay central for a first trip with tours, or move out for one or more nights of dark sky.

Centre
Alta centre and Bossekop
Best all-round base for first visits, tour pickups and the airport bus.
The centre around the Northern Lights Cathedral holds the shopping centre, the bus stops, the restaurants and the hotel lobbies where most tours collect their guests. Bossekop, the older part of town two kilometres west, is quieter and closer to the museum and the fjord shore.
Value case
Usually the best value for a three- or four-night tour-based trip because the airport bus, the pickups and dinner are all within a short walk, and the chain hotels include breakfast.
Watch out
The centre is lit and the fjord side is open to the weather, so weaker aurora will not show from the hotel window; budget for at least one guided evening or a drive.

Alta river valley: igloo hotel and husky kennels
Best for a night in the igloo hotel and for sledding from the door.
The Alta river runs south from the town toward the plateau, and the valley 10 to 20 km upstream holds Sorrisniva's igloo hotel and lodge, the Trasti & Trine kennel and Holmen Husky Lodge. The forest blocks the town light, the dogs are on site and the airport is 15 to 25 minutes away.
Value case
Worth it for two nights when a husky trip and an aurora night from the door replace two separate guided evenings; kennel stays usually bundle dinner and the sled trip.
Watch out
The igloo hotel is one night at a premium and needs a warm room before or after; kennel lodges have minimum stays and set dinner times, so check both before fixing flights.

Best for two or more dark-sky nights with a car or a booked transfer.
Small lodges 15 to 40 minutes from the centre, in the side valleys under Haldde, on the mountainside above the fjord and in the pine forest of the Alta valley, offer aurora from the terrace, domes with glass roofs and dinner cooked on site. They cost transport time and work best as the whole stay or as the last two nights.
Value case
Worth the premium for aurora photographers and couples who would otherwise book a guided evening every night; three nights at a lodge can replace three tours.
Watch out
Half-board, transfers and the loss of walkable options add up, and a family that wants the pool and the shops will feel far from town; check the transfer terms before booking flights.

Which Alta hotels are the usual tour pickup points?
Most operators name Scandic Alta and Thon Hotel Alta, or a central stop near the cathedral, and will collect from valley lodges on request. Confirm the exact spot and time in the booking confirmation; it changes by operator and season.
How far is the igloo hotel from Alta centre?
Sorrisniva is up the Alta river valley about 20 minutes by car from the centre and a similar time from the airport. Transfers can be booked with the stay, and a day visit is possible if you are not sleeping there.
Is it worth staying at a husky kennel rather than booking a sled tour from town?
For two nights, usually yes: the sled trip, dinner and an aurora night away from the town lights come as one package and you skip the transfers. For one night the town plus a four-hour tour is simpler.
How far is the airport from the centre hotels?
About four kilometres. The airport bus takes around ten minutes to the centre and taxis a similar time; the valley lodges are 15 to 25 minutes and Mathisdalen about 40 minutes.
Can I stay outside Alta and still do the whale boats?
Yes, but the boats leave from the town quays in the morning, so plan a lodge stay before or after the whale day and drive in, or sleep in the centre the night before.
When do Alta hotels sell out?
Christmas and New Year, the February school-holiday weeks and the Finnmarksløpet race week in March fill first, and the igloo hotel and kennel lodges have few rooms at any time. Book the fixed-capacity stays as soon as the flights are set.
